Here at Visceral Change we are dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion as the basic groundwork for organizational restructuring. Through the programs we’ve developed such as the Core Five Components to Social Justice and the Sociosystemic Development Model, we strive to create a change in the world starting with ourselves. By having an understanding of the world around us, we can begin to work to become better allies and advocates.
Thus, we introduce to you our new weekly series to help you stay up to date on what’s happening in the world: the weekly wrap!
What is the weekly wrap? We know that between social media, local, national, and global news that there is a lot being thrown at you at any given time. Here’s what we’re talking about this week:
Black is King is out now on Disney+ and I’ve been watching it on repeat. Beyoncé’s latest visual album created using music from her original soundtrack,The Lion King: The Gift, is not only visually stunning, but an ode to the beauty of Black people. The movie drips with nods to African culture that may or may not be recognizable to everyone watching it, which makes it that much better as it introduces the public to this wonderful story and culture. Plus, it’s stacked with cameos from Jay-Z, Jessie Reyes, Lupita Nyong’o, and others. (Stereogum)

Fifty-five years ago, The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed prohibiting racial discrimination in voting proceeding a movement largely organized by Black women. Check out this amazing article about the women involved. (USA Today)
Proceeding a large fire in the Port of Beirut, explosions leveled buildings resulting in the deaths of at least 137 people, leaving thousands injured. After reopening most of the state, Arizona saw a spike in Covid-19 cases. Thankfully, that rise seems to be steadily declining as Arizonans practice safe social distancing and wearing masks, among other restrictions put in place back in June.
