The Weekly Wrap

Here at Visceral Change, we are dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion as the basic groundwork for organizational restructuring. Through the programs we’ve developed such as the Core Five Components to Social Justice and the Sociosystemic Development Model, we strive to create a change in the world starting with ourselves. By having an understanding of the world around us, we can begin to work to become better allies and advocates.

What is the weekly wrap? We know that between social media, local, national, and global news that there is a lot being thrown at you at any given time. Let us relieve some of that stress and help you find some of the best, most informative stories out there in regards to all things cultural, social, and political.

In their ongoing attempts to diversify classic characters, Disney has cast Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi as everyone’s favorite feisty fairy, Tinkerbell in the upcoming live-action Peter Pan and Wendy. This comes in the wake of Halle Bailey being cast as Ariel in the live-action The Little Mermaid. While this news has been met with overwhelming positive feedback for Disney’s decision, it has also continued the debate of whether or not it’s appropriate to forego the original character’s skin color in lieu of diversity. As a woman of color, who has only two Disney princesses that remotely resemble myself, I personally love this.

On Saturday, President Trump announced that he is nominating Amy Coney Barrett to fill the Supreme Court Justice seat left vacant after the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This official announcement comes just a week after RBG’s passing. Also, with this announcement coming so close to the November Presidential election it’s clear that this will be the topic we’ll hear about most in the coming weeks, especially with the ongoing debate of whether or not the elected president should have claim on this nomination. A full Senate vote is currently schedule for a week before the election.

Protests in Louisville, Kentucky continue for the fifth night tonight (while under curfew) after a grand jury indicted one officer involved in the shooting and murder of twenty-six year old Breonna Taylor in her home. That officer has since been fired, but was charged with wanton endangerment and not directly with the murder of Breonna Taylor. The other two officers involved were not charged.

Say her name louder. Justice for Breonna Taylor.
