The Weekly Wrap

Here at Visceral Change, we are dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion as the basic groundwork for organizational restructuring. Through the programs we’ve developed such as the Core Five Components to Social Justice and the Sociosystemic Development Model, we strive to create a change in the world starting with ourselves. By having an understanding of the world around us, we can begin to work to become better allies and advocates.

What is the weekly wrap? We know that between social media, local, national, and global news that there is a lot being thrown at you at any given time. Let us relieve some of that stress and help you find some of the best, most informative stories out there in regards to all things cultural, social, and political.

Here’s what we’re talking about this week:

Today, at the age of 87, Supreme Court Justice and feminist icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg has passed away from metastatic cancer of the pancreas. RBG will forever be remembered for her lifetime of work fighting for women’s rights since the 1970s, as well as the 27 years she served on the nation’s highest court where she was the second woman to be appointed. She was a pioneer, a woman who showed us all how to never back down from a fight and will be dearly missed. Rest in Justice the notorious RBG. We love you.

After this Sunday, TikTok will no longer be available for new user downloads. This is the latest act after an executive order that started on August 6th that calls on bans for both TikTok and WeChat over their Chinese ownership. TikTok users who already have the app downloaded will still be able to use the app, however.

A new study has found that “due to increasing housework and childcare, mothers have reduced their working hours four to five times more than fathers.” I was really struck by this recent piece that Buzzfeed did on parenting during the pandemic and its commentary on “learned helplessness”.

As a huge advocate of art and artists, I have been in the market for some really unique pieces specifically by Black artists to add to my collection. My search brought me to this amazing New York Magazine showcase. I was specifically drawn to the colorwork of Jade Purple Brown, who juxtaposes vivid colors that complement dark skin in the most beautiful way. Check it out to see how you can show support.

With the current climate of the world at large, people of all walks of life using their voices for the greater good, and the presidential election looming over the horizon, it’s more important than ever to speak out for what you believe in constructively. Don’t know how to do that? Start with a conversation with your local representatives.
